Meramec Horticulture Department to Host Annual Plant Sale

Students working in a greenhouse preparing plants for the plant sale

Thousands of plants, grown in the campus greenhouse by horticulture students and staff at St. Louis Community College-Meramec, will be part of the annual plant sale, slated April 25-27 on campus, 11333 Big Bend Road.

The plant sale is hosted by the Meramec Botanical Society and horticulture program.

A preview sale open to STLCC students, faculty and staff only, will be Thursday, April 25, from 4-6 p.m. The public sale will be Friday, April 26, from 9 a.m.-4 p.m., and Saturday, April 27, from 9 a.m.-2 p.m.

The sale will be held in Parking Lot K, at the corner of Big Bend Road and Couch Avenue, weather permitting. The rain location will be the Student Center.

Plants for sale will include herbs, natives, annuals, perennials and vegetables ranging from $3 to $12. Some larger plants, such as small trees and shrubs, will be sold for more. Cash or check will be accepted.

All proceeds go toward the Meramec Botanical Society, an active club on campus. In previous years, these proceeds have funded student trips to industry conferences and horticulture life on campus, such as the urban farm and greenhouse. Funds have also contributed to student scholarships, local community gardens and the next year’s plant sale.

The plant sale has become a Meramec tradition. It has raised funds for the Botanical Society for more than 10 years. Hundreds of people have attended the sale and supported the students who work long hours in preparation for the annual event.

A group of 20 dedicated students began working in November with horticulture faculty and staff to seed and grow the plants.

“One of the most rewarding things is growing something that you know will add value to someone’s life,” said Taz Carter, a Botanical Society member.

Every day students volunteer in the greenhouse to make this plant sale possible, all while gaining hands-on training in the field. The event gives students practical and real-world experience in their future career path from the time seeds are planted through the days of the sale.

Sarah Moore, the greenhouse lead, is proud of her students and enjoys “watching them build and support one another while becoming young professionals in the industry.”

The horticulture program and Meramec Botanical Society work hand-in-hand to offer the education and training necessary for students to thrive in the horticulture field after graduation.
