Messmer Reflects on Congressional Run at Upcoming Event

John Messmer

John Messmer, professor of political science at St. Louis Community College-Meramec, always dreamed of running for Congress.

He has made it happen in 2018. He announced his candidacy for the Democratic nomination in Missouri’s second congressional district on Jan. 3. His candidacy lasted exactly 216 days. Although he lost, he learned a lot about politics, St. Louis and himself.

And now, he’s ready to talk about it.

Messmer will host a special event, “Ruining it for Everyone Else: Reflections on My 216-Day Run for Congress,” at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 13, in Room 201 of the Student Center on the Meramec campus, 11333 Big Bend Road.

“Now that the primary is over, I wanted to share my experiences with everyone,” said Messmer. “There was not a better place I could think of to share my thoughts and answer questions people might have than at the college.”

Although Messmer has a doctorate in political science and understands how elections work, he was still surprised at the importance of money in the electoral process, something he will speak to during the event.

“It was part sickening, embarrassing, comical and — unfortunately — necessary,” Messmer said about the experience of “cold calling” strangers to ask them to donate to his campaign.

One of his favorite parts of running a campaign? Teaching American politics to students while simultaneously engaging in the process.

Messmer will offer many more interesting glimpses into the front lines of a political campaign – some of them funny, lots of them surprising – during his presentation.
