“Drawing Forward” Exhibit Debuts at STLCC-Meramec

Drawing Forward exhibit

A new exhibit, “Drawing Forward: Process and Vision,” is on display at St. Louis Community College-Meramec’s Contemporary Art Gallery through Oct. 26.

The exhibition includes selected studies, preparatory works and design drawings that reflect the exploratory first stages of the artistic process. It includes the work of 18 artists, including three STLCC professors.

“Final artwork is paired with artists’ studies and written notations, etc.,” said Betsy Morris, art professor and the exhibit’s curator. “I hope that viewers will enjoy a glimpse into the creative process.”

The exhibit includes some 3-D art as well.

Perhaps the most instantly noted piece in the exhibit, Morris noted, is artist Blaize’B’s 8-foot sculptural earring, titled “$.99,” that rests against the gallery wall.

“It was created using wood and gold spandex,” Morris said.

One of the artists, Domenic Cretara, passed away from pancreatic cancer before the exhibit was finalized. His artwork, a large-scale drawing, was able to be included with the help of his wife, Betty, who mailed some of his oversized drawings and artist sketchbooks from his studio in Long Beach, Calif.

“I spent a quiet evening in my office reading the sketchbooks – a chronology of notes and studies,” said Morris, who had been in correspondence with Cretara over a six-month time period in 2017. “This was a poignant moment for me. Particular pages that reference the exhibited drawings are included in the exhibit.”

“Drawing Forward” will be on display Monday-Thursday, 10 a.m.-6:30 p.m., Friday 10 a.m.-4 p.m. and Sunday 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public.
