STLCC-Meramec Hosts Cuban Poster Expo

There’s no need to travel. You can find a little taste of Cuba in the Contemporary Art Gallery located at St. Louis Community College-Meramec, at least until Dec. 14.

Meramec is currently hosting a Cuban poster exposition titled BLINK: Havana/St. Louis Poster Expo. It will be on display through Dec. 14 in the Contemporary Art Gallery at STLCC-Meramec, 11333 Big Bend Road. The exhibit is free and open to the public.

This unique exhibit, featuring over 80 poster designs, celebrates the legacy of Cuban poster art by bringing poster designs and designers from inside and outside the island of Cuba to St. Louis. Posters were curated by designers Carlos Zamora from St. Louis and Pepe Menéndez from Havana, as well as two guest artists from Havana, Laura Llopiz and Lyly Diaz.

Mike Swoboda, graphic communications professor and a collaborator on the exhibit, is most excited about the eleven commissioned designs that were made specifically for this exhibition.

“These posters, located in the central part of the gallery, attempt to conceptually link the cities and cultures of Havana and St. Louis in a design partnership — they are all fresh and visually exhilarating,” he said.

The earliest posters featured in the expo are from the 1960s, and lead up to present day works. Production styles in the expo include silk-screen, illustration, photo-illustration and computer-rendered graphics. All of the posters featured in the expo are two feet by three feet in size.

Gallery hours for this exhibit are 10 a.m.-6:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 13, and 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Friday, Dec. 14. For more information, call 314-984-7278.
