Getting Started with Windows Live

This page provides step-by-step first-time login instructions for your my.stlcc.edu student e-mail account. You first lookup your @my.stlcc.edu e-mail address in Banner Self-Service, then go to the Windows Live site and perform a special first-time login. Current credit students, and employees of the College, are automatically provisioned with my.stlcc.edu accounts.

The information on this webpage is also available as a 2-page printable document. Download the Getting Started Guide (882KB PDF).

How do I get my my.stlcc.edu e-mail address?

If you are a student, your my.stlcc.edu e-mail address may be viewed using Banner Self-Service. To view or update your e-mail address(es), login in to Banner Self-Service with your student ID ("A" number) and Banner Self-Service pin. Note that you must type a capital "A" at the start of your student ID number. If you are a College employee, note the special instructions at the end of this section.

Select the "Personal Information" tab at the top, and click on the "View E-mail Address(es)" link on the Banner "Personal Information" page.

Special Note: If you are a College employee, your @my.stlcc.edu address is your network Active Directory account ID (the one you use to login to the network) followed by "@my.stlcc.edu". For example, if your network ID is "dfaculty", your new Windows Live account would be "dfaculty@my.stlcc.edu".

What do I need to do the first time I login to Windows Live?

Click on the my.stlcc.edu Windows Live login button in the left column of this web page, or go to http://mail.live.com. Sign in with your @my.stlcc.edu e-mail address as the "Windows Live ID" and your student ID ("A" number) as the first-time password. Make sure to type a capital "A" as the first character of the password. Click the "Sign In" button.

The first time you login to Windows Live, a "Provide account information" screen will appear. We strongly recommend you follow the instructions we provide here to ensure you are able to easily reset your password and access your my.stlcc.edu account in the future. You need to re-enter your student ID ("A" number) in the "Password" box. Make sure you start it with a capital "A".

In the "Change your password" section, enter the password you want to use for accessing your my.stlcc.edu Windows Live account. The new password needs to be at least six characters in length. You will need to type it in both boxes.

The "Select a question and secret answer" is very important if you ever need to reset your password. Select one of the questions and provide a secret answer that is easy for you to remember, but hard for others to guess. You will need to re-type it exactly the same in the future, so make sure it is an answer that you feel you can re-type the same way many months from now.

If you already have another e-mail address you regularly use, you may enter it in "Add an alternate e-mail address". This is another way you can reset your password - by having the reset sent to this alternate e-mail address. You need to type the address in both boxes. If you are a College employee, enter your official College Exchange e-mail address in this field.

The "Your information" is important because it is required to reset your password using the security question you entered above. Please don't change the "Country" from "United States", but enter the other fields so that you will remember the answers if you ever have to reset your password.

Review and accept the Microsoft Windows Live service agreement and Privacy Statement by clicking "I accept".

A screen will appear indicating you just updated your personal information and password. Click the "Sign in to Windows Live" button.

Login with your @my.stlcc.edu e-mail address and the new password you entered. A screen will appear that requires you to type the characters you see in a picture. This prevents spammers from using automated tools to create multiple mailboxes. Type the characters you see in the picture and click "Continue".

By default, the mailbox will open on the "Today" screen. Most users prefer it to open directly to their inbox. You make this change by finding the "Want to start with your inbox? To skip the Today page when you sign in, change your settings." text at the bottom of the middle column. Click "change your settings" at the end of that sentence, and select the "Skip the Today page ..." option on the "Today page settings" screen. Click "Save" to make the change.

Click "Mail" on the top bar to open your inbox and exit the "Options" page. By making the above change, future logins will open directly to the inbox.
