Health Information Technology
Health information technology (HIT) professionals are experts in collecting health data and analyzing the content of medical patient records and patient information systems. Graduates are specialists working with health information systems, managing medical records, and coding information for reimbursement and research. As the guardians of patient health information, HIT professionals safeguard confidential medical information in a variety of health care settings, including acute care facilities, extended care facilities, nursing homes, clinics, physician offices and other health care providers. Common job titles include clinical coder, coding manager, clinical data collection and reporting specialist, cancer registrar, data integrity specialist, and reimbursement specialist.
This program prepares health information technicians to support health information management in an electronic environment (e-HIM) and adheres to the American Health Information Management Association’s (AHIMA) Framework for HIM education.
Is the program accredited by CAHIIM?
The AAS degree in Health Information Technology is not accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM). The process to obtain accreditation has started and it is anticipated the program will be reviewed in 2012.
