Overview of Art at Florissant Valley
Florissant Valley's Arts and Humanities Department provides a physical, intellectual, and social environment encouraging students to effectively think and communicate, develop cultural literacy, and make a commitment to lifelong learning. Staffed by well-trained and dedicated professional faculty, the department strives to create a learning-centered environment focused on student success.
The goals of the Arts and Humanities Department are to meet the educational needs of our community by providing coursework and other learning opportunities in the visual arts, humanities, and philosophy. Our activities include the provision of:
- Associate degree leading to job placement (A.A.S.).
- Associate degrees leading to transfer to four-year institutions (A.F.A.).
- Individual courses to provide specific skill enhancement.
- Opportunities for personal enrichment.
- Cooperative programs with area high schools.
- In-service training for area high school teachers.
- Travel within the U.S. and abroad for diverse cultural experiences.
To ensure transferability of credits, the art department has formal articulation agreements with the University of Missouri - St. Louis and the Kansas City Art Institute. In addition, FV’s art department is a member of the San Francisco Art Institute's Community College Scholarship Program and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago's Partnership Program. These programs facilitate transfer and broaden scholarship opportunities for our graduates.
Florissant Valley is an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (since 1977). NASAD is the nationally recognized accrediting body for premiere schools of art and design in the United States. Relatively few community college art departments nationwide are NASAD accredited. Of this elite group, Florissant Valley was the first.
