KCFV FM is operated as a learning lab for the mass communications students of St. Louis Community College. All staff members are students, except for the general manager, the chief engineer, and the station advisor. All students must be currently taking or have taken Introduction to Broadcasting and Radio Production classes to be on the air. Once completing these courses, the students can receive college credit for working at the station through another course entitled Applied Broadcasting. Students must maintain a minimum grade point average of 2.0 and must be currently enrolled in at least one class to continue activity with the station.

The station is part of an Associates of Arts program designed to transfer to a four year college or university. For more information about an AA degree in Communications, check out the description located in the degree description.

KCFV signed on the air April 17, 1972 at 89.5 on the FM dial with 10 watts of power. In 1982 the station raised its power to its current level of 100 watts.

KCFV Ferguson has been streaming live since October 8th, 2008. At approximately 12:30 p.m. KCFV went live with the song “Bohemian Rhapsody” by Queen. Barry Yoakum was the operator on duty.

KCFV is located in the Communications building on the Florissant Valley campus.
