Six-Step Application Process

Please review the basic eligibility requirements before applying to the program:

  • Be 16 to 20 years old
  • Attend a partnering school district and currently live within the school district
  • Have 14 or more high school credits
  • Have dropped out of high school or be at risk of dropping out
  • Possess reading skills at an eighth grade level or higher
  • Have the desire and determination to learn and to earn a high school diploma and a college degree

Step 1: Complete an Application Packet

  • Complete the application packet in full. Do not forget to sign your name.
  • Complete your written answers to the three essay questions.
  • Complete the consent for and educational records release included in this application packet, sign them and, if you are under the age of 18, have your parent or guardian sign them as well.
  • Contact your school district for your transcript, use the school district info form provided in the application packet. This form should be signed and verified by a school official.
  • Reserve your place at an information session by calling the Gateway to College at 314-513-4216.

Step 2: Attend an Information Session

  • Bring your application packet and completed essays with you.
  • Learn more detailed information on the Gateway to College program, including program philosophy, expectations, benefits and next steps.
  • Have a chance to ask questions about the program
  • Review your application materials to make sure you meet all basic eligibility requirements. 
  • Allow us to have a chance to meet you and learn more about your academic and life goals.

Step 3: Enroll to STLCC (STLCC.edu)

To enroll - Logon to STLCC.edu, then click the blue APPLY NOW button in the left column.

-Once started, select dual enrollment
-contact the Gateway to College office once you’ve completed this process

Step 4: ACCUPLACER Placement Testing

The placement test (free of charge) gives students’ essential information about their academic skills and needs. Following testing, you will meet with Mr. Gillespie for a review of your results and determine coursework that will be appropriate to your academic skills and chosen program of study.

  • Get prepared-review sample questions and take practice tests at accuplacer.collegeboard.org/students
  • No appointment is necessary
  • Bring a photo ID and STLCC ID number (contact Mr. Gillespie for your STLCC A number before testing) 
  • This test is self-paced take your time (It takes most students 1 ½ hours to complete all 3 sections)
  • Results are provided immediately (bring results to the Gateway to College office)

STLCC may waive the reading and/or the English portions of the placement test if students provide documentation of one of the following:

  • A college transcript or grade report documenting successful completion (with a C grade or higher) of reading, and writing course prerequisites.
  • College credit from an accredited institution will waive the reading test.
  • A reading score of 18 or above to waive the reading test.
  • An English score of 18 or above to waive the writing test.
  • A math score of 22 or above to waive the math test.

Step 5: Participate in an individual interview

Your interview will be with one or more Gateway to College staff members. The interview gives us the chance to get to know you in a more personal setting and learn more about your strengths and you motivation to take part in the program. This is also an opportunity for you to ask any questions that you may have about the program.

Your interview will take approximately 20 minutes to complete. All interviews will take place at the Gateway to College office.

Step 6: Selection Committee

The selection committee will review all candidate applications for the Gateway to College program who have completed steps one through four. It is very important that you turn in all required application materials by the deadline. Acceptance is not guaranteed. Space in the program is limited.

The selection committee will be evaluating applicants based on the following factors:

  • Candidate meets all the eligibility requirements
  • Application is complete, and all application materials were turned in by the deadline
  • Candidate achievers at least the minimum standard scores on all evaluation sessions
  • Candidate displays positive behavior, attitude and participation at the evaluation sessions
  • Candidate completes the individual interview and shows us that he/she is ready and motivated
  • Candidate displays a commitment to completing the Gateway to College program

You will be notified by letter of the selection committee’s decision. If you are accepted, you will be sent a letter of acceptance.

If for some reason you do not receive a notification letter, please call us at 314-513-4216 to check on your status. If you have not heard from us, do not wait until the first day of classes to check on your acceptance status. If you have moved since you applied provide us with your new address.
