Business Office Application Training (BOAT) Program

The Business Office Application Training program (also known as BOAT program), is a 10-week course certificate program with two weeks of practical administrative internships offering students the practical skills necessary to compete in today’s business offices. The hands-on and small class size (9-15) is ideal for individuals re-entering the workforce, dislocated workers, adult, career changers and those seeking to upgrade their skills. The professional instructional staff ensures that you leave with a strong foundation in written and verbal communication, proficiency in Microsoft Office, the fundamentals of business office procedures, customer service and personal career planning. The successful completion of BOAT also provides an opportunity to receive core Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) certification in Microsoft Word and Excel and nine credit hours from St. Louis Community College.

The program’s core components follows:

BOAT Foundations

PC Fundamentals

Designed for exploration of basic hardware components of desktop computer systems, and office suite software applications, this course fosters mastery of the Microsoft Windows operating system, file management, mouse operation and basic hardware and peripheral device use.

Essential Administrative Skills
Essentials of Administrative Office Procedures (plus internship)

This course endeavors to help students develop specific competencies necessary for efficient administration of duties in modern business offices. Through classroom instruction, office simulation activities, case studies, and first-level internship, trainees master administrative techniques and solve common business problems related to professional image and ethics; telephone techniques and customer service; data management, records management, and more.

Effective Workplace Communication

Through traditional classroom instruction, interactive activities, and group projects, this course introduces the practical application and underlining theoretical components of effective communication necessary for competent verbal and nonverbal interaction and exchange in a professional environment.

Beyond Customer Service

A comprehensive examination (through reading, case study and lecture) of contemporary customer service concepts, methodologies, procedures, and applications, this course helps students enhance their customer care management abilities using an applied approach.

PC Applications

MS Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint (MOS Certification available for Word and Excel only).

Trainee Development

Professional Image:

In a series of highly engaging lectures, group projects, role-plays, and colloquies, trainees interact with an image management coach, and with one another, in the development of a professional corporate image.

Career Development:

This course focuses on the facilitation and development of strategic professional or vocational job search and career advancement techniques. Through the discussion, study, and application of the principles of effective employment searching, professional networking, credential reporting, and interviewing students develop essential skills necessary for accomplishing career advancement objectives. Additionally, students actively participate in employment search activities to assist in job development and placement.
