Audio Visual Production Technician Training
Training Overview
This eight-week accelerated job training program prepares participants to safely and knowledgeably interact, communicate and carry out basic tasks in the entertainment technical field. Participants will learn fundamental safety, terminology and technical knowledge for sound, light, and video activities performed at an entry level in the entertainment technical field. Upon successful completion of the course, participants will be able to perform the following entry level job tasks of an Audio Visual Production Technician:
- Safely off/on load, transfer and stage audio visual equipment for events like concerts and conventions using industry recognized tools, techniques and terminology.
- Knowledgeably locate and assist in the assembly and set up of equipment used in the entertainment industry such as: stage sets; scenery; trussing; spot lights; running audio and video cables; audio and camera assembly.
- Run simple spot lights and cameras; monitor audio and video equipment; assist in the running of more complex setups.
- Troubleshoot simple audio visual problems using a systematic checklist approach.
Training Topics
This intensive, hands-on training program will include instruction and application of learned skills in the following areas:
- Safe work practices for the entertainment technical fields such as introduction to OSHA; selection and proper use of personal protection equipment; conducting safety observation audits; fall protection; back and ladder safety; powered lift vehicles; hazard communication; Emergency Response; electrical hazards
- Soft skills such as customer service; team skills; effective communication and listening; giving and taking direction; work ethic; diversity in the work place
- Electricity, sound and lighting theory
- Fundamental skills training in the identification and use of terms, equipment, tools and simple tasks as they relate to entry level job tasks in the entertainment technical field
- Set up and run basic audio, lighting and video
- Troubleshoot basic audio visual problems using a systematic approach
Upon successful completion of the program, students will receive a certificate of completion.
Prerequisites
- Individuals interested in this training program will be required to take four WorkKeys assessments and achieve the minimum scores required for the Audio Visual Production Technician job classification.
- Applicants are also expected to enter this training program with basic computer literacy knowledge.
- Applicants should be able to lift a minimum of 50 lbs.
- Applicants will need reliable transportation - the training sessions may be held at various locations and is a necessity for graduates to be able to respond to job requests on short notice at a wide variety of locations where public transportation is not an option.

Training may be held at various locations such as St. Louis Convention and Visitor’s Commission, America Center; St. Louis Community College and entertainment site venues.
The time schedule for this eight-week accelerated training program may vary to accommodate the availability of site activities and trainer schedules. For weeks one through three, training sessions will be conducted typically from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday. During weeks four through eight, the total number of hours and their time frame may vary due to the type of planned hands-on training activities, events scheduled at the training site and/or trainer availability. This may include after business hours and possibly weekends. Every attempt will be made to communicate the schedule as soon as possible in the event of scheduling a non-time standard event.
