Government and Leadership

American Student Association of Community Colleges

The District Student Government Associations attend the ASACC conference each year. The ASACC conference provides general sessions, keynote speakers, workshops and forums designed to educate student participants on the major issues that are critical to community colleges. Some of those issues include: Pell Grants, student loan interest rates, federal work-study funding, Perkins funding for community colleges, textbook prices, reauthorization of the Higher Education Act, student debt relief and other topics. While attending and participating in the conference, students are given time to meet with their representatives and senators or their staff members regarding these important issues and other campus issues that have been coordinated with campus administration. The conference serves as a very strong educational leadership experience and is held every spring in Washington, D.C.

Student leaders have the opportunity to enhance their critical thinking, communication, decision-making and other management skills by participating in one or more of the following leadership experiences.

Club leaders, members of the Student Government Association (SGA), and the Student Activities Council (SAC) from the Meramec, Florissant Valley and Forest Park campuses all participate in the COLT (Club and Organization Leadership Training) program. Participants attend an off-campus, two-day leadership conference. Usually it is held in the fall and explores topics such as team-building, group communication, meeting management, planning, and promoting and managing events. As a result, leaders are more effective in delivering programs for their clubs or the campus as a whole.

District Student Government Association

The DSGA allows students from each of the four campuses to meet and confer regarding common issues. Once a year, they report on their activities directly to the St. Louis Community College Board of Trustees. DSGA has actively been involved in discussions regarding maintenance fee increases, Student Center improvements, researching and recommending new food service providers, and the implementation of the Higher One Card and Tuition Payment Plan.

National Association for Campus Activities

The NACA Regional Conference gives student leaders the opportunity to learn about services and entertainers available on the college circuit. During the conference, they meet with students from nearly 80 two- and four-year colleges to discuss best practices for student activities and exchange new ideas.

Missouri Community College Association Student Government Association

The MCCA-SGA allows students leaders from each campus to meet with student leaders from 17 Missouri community colleges. One of the highlights of the conference is the Make a Difference Award, Special Event Programming and Outstanding Student Leader awards presentation. During the past five years, STLCC has been cited for outstanding programming several times. In addition to the awards, students attending the spring MCCA-SGA Conference have an opportunity to lobby the state legislature. The STLCC Student Government Association has been an active part of St. Louis Community College's lobbying efforts to seek increases in state funding.

Student Ambassadors

The Student Ambassador program symbolizes the college’s greatest tradition -- personalized attention and service. Student Ambassadors are a select group of students who serve as representatives of St. Louis Community College and provide service by assisting with campus events and activities, conducting campus tours, making presentations to school groups and serving as role models and mentors for new and prospective students.

Student Ambassadors are provided with a distinctive uniform and paid student wages for time worked. They are trained to enhance communication and presentation skills.

St. Louis Community College benefits from the energy and enthusiasm of its student advocates. The students, in turn, benefit by becoming more familiar with the campus, services and staff.
