Program Mission and Goals


In carrying out the mission of St. Louis Community College to provide accessible, high quality instruction, the Teacher Education program's mission is to:

  • Serve the academic and geographical needs of those in the St. Louis metropolitan area who wish to pursue a career in education;
  • Provide high quality instruction and support programs to the broad range of students who can benefit from such programs; and
  • Provide preparatory knowledge and experience to students who intend to complete a 4 year college or university program.


The main goal of the Teacher Education Program at St. Louis Community College is to provide a sound foundation for pre-service teachers that emphasizes the preparation of reflective professionals competent with respect to factual knowledge and pedagogy.  The program has a special commitment to both traditional and non-traditional students drawn predominantly from the greater St. Louis area.  The program has 10 specific goals:

1. To offer foundational and exploratory courses in education;

2. To orient students to careers in education;

3. To provide first hand knowledge of contemporary educational practices including the use of technology in the classroom;

4. To explore professional issues;

5. To form partnerships with local elementary, middle, and secondary schools;

6. To form partnerships with 4 year colleges with teacher education programs;

7. To examine the educational implications of serving a culturally diverse student population;

8. To facilitate the development of critical and reflective decision-making skills;

9. To identify the developmental capacities and needs of children of different ages;

10. To recognize the importance of relating pedagogical decisions to children’s developmental capacities and needs.
