Phlebotomy
Certificate of Specialization in Phlebotomy is an 11-credit-hour program that prepares students for entry-level positions as phlebotomists.
A phlebotomist is a member of the clinical (medical) laboratory team with the main function of collecting blood specimens by venipuncture and microcollection techniques and facilitating the collection and transport of other specimens. Communication skills are necessary since the phlebotomy technician has direct contact with many other health team members, as well as patients. The phlebotomist's role is vital toward improving laboratory testing and reporting and for providing excellence in patient care.
Persons interested in phlebotomy should be:
- Interested in health sciences
- Comfortable working with people in one-to-one relationships
- Patient and tactful in intervention with others
Note: A background check and drug screening (at the student’s expense) is required prior to clinical placement.
