Mechanical Engineering Technology
Associate in Applied Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology is a 70-credit-hour program that provides students with the scientific and engineering knowledge needed to obtain entry-level positions in this field. Some courses of this program are only scheduled in the evening.
The Mechanical Engineering Technology program prepares students for careers in mechanical engineering. Mechanical engineering technology classes are characterized by hands-on classroom work and practical experience. Students will learn to perform mechanical testing and reduction, interpretation of data from tests, design and develop new equipment or modify existing equipment, and prepare or interrupt engineering drawings and sketches. In addition, students will learn the theory and principles of mechanical engineering technology in the development and testing of machinery and equipment under the direction of engineering staff and physical scientists. Students also have the option of substituting six credit hours of appropriate and relevant workplace learning experience for technical courses and/or electives.
There are numerous possibilities for persons interested in a mechanical engineering technology career. Some of the positions graduates are qualified for include engineering assistants, laboratory technicians, designers, tool designers and plant engineering technicians in a variety of industries such as automotive, aerospace, heavy equipment, chemical, electrical, petroleum and food processing.
The U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts the overall employment of engineering technicians will increase about at the average rate for all occupations through 2014. In addition, as technology becomes more sophisticated, employers will continue to look for technicians who are skilled in new technology and require a minimum of additional job training. An increase in the number of jobs related to public health and safety should create job opportunities for engineering technicians with the appropriate training and certification.
Persons interested in mechanical engineering technology should possess:
- Analytical skills
- An interest in design
- An interest in mechanics
