Hospitality Studies: Hotel and Restaurant Management

Associate in Applied Science Degree (FP)

The Hotel and Restaurant Management program prepares students for entry-level positions in the hotel and restaurant management industry. The coursework for this program involves learning safety and sanitation procedures, hotel and restaurant law, marketing and cost control.

There are a variety of job opportunities available for students interested in hotel or restaurant management. For hotel management, there are several different areas to get jobs, such as casinos, motels, resorts, hotels and bed-and-breakfast inns. For restaurant management, a person can work in a cafeteria, limited-service restaurants, full-service restaurants and a variety of other food service areas. In this profession, persons are not limited to working in restaurants or hotels.

The hotel and restaurant industry is the second largest industry in St. Louis, with more than $2 million in sales each year. A student with a degree in hotel and restaurant management from St. Louis Community College gets an average of five job offers after graduation. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, restaurant and drink establishments are ranked among the nation’s leading employers, with 8.9 million wage and salary jobs in 2004, and hotel and other accommodations provided 1.8 million wage and salary jobs.

Persons interested in hotel and restaurant management should possess:

  •  An understanding of business fundamentals
