Old World Practices and ‘New World’ Realities - Enslavement in the Americas

Student Assignment


Three Groups:

  1. Discuss/describe medieval and pre-modern slavery practices in Europe, Africa, and the Mediterranean region prior to the Atlantic slave trade.
  2. Discuss conditions/circumstances in the Americas that created a “demand” for slaves in the modern world (post 1500).
  3. Discuss conditions/circumstances in Africa that created a “supply”
    of slaves for the Americas in the modern world (post 1500).

Each Group:

  1. How similar/dissimilar were the Africans captured and bound for the Middle Passage (trans-Atlantic voyage) – language, culture, religion, skills, etc.
  2. Identify at least one unanswered question from today’s readings.
