Certificate of Specialization in Gerontology is a 15-credit-hour program that prepares students for entry-level work in geriatrics and other services directed to senior citizens.
The Gerontology program prepares students to work in organized facilities or programs designed for older adults. Students can gain employment in nursing homes, senior centers, social programs or related facilities. The program is structured around basic courses necessary to begin employment. One practicum experience and seminar is designed to aid the student in employment choices. Students gain practical work experience under the supervision of college faculty and professionals in the field.
The certificate is designed to offer specialized coursework to help the student develop a practical knowledge base in the field of gerontology and provides opportunities to practice this knowledge in appropriate agencies with guidance and supervision from professionals. After graduation, students may gain employment or may continue study toward a degree.
According to the U.S. Department of Labor, employment for the gerontology field is expected to grow much faster than average for all occupations. New opportunities will result from people advancing into new positions, retiring and leaving the work force.
Persons interested in gerontology should possess:
- Responsibility
- Maturity
- Patience
- A genuine concern and interest in geriatrics
