Art Activities at Florissant Valley

Of the many things that distinguish Flo Valley’s art department, none is more important than its focus on community-building. We provide many, many art-themed activities for our students to become involved in. Examples of these are provided below:

  • Clubs: Photo Club, Fine Art Club, Comic Book Guild, and Graphic Design Club
  • Portfolio Day: this is a huge annual event with a long and successful history at FV. Visiting representatives from a number of regional and national art programs visit Flo Valley to review sophomores’ transfer portfolios.
  • The Art-In: a fun and exhausting annual all-nighter in the art department, typically held on a Saturday evening in late April. This is a great opportunity to study with visiting artists who give demonstrations/workshops through the evening, or to simply watch videos, eat pizza, and maybe settle in a studio to complete projects for upcoming final reviews.
  • Local field trips to a variety of venues such as artists’ studios, public lectures, exhibits, printing companies, etc.
  • Out-of-state, art-focused travel opportunities: recent trips included Seattle, New York, Philadelphia, and San Francisco
  • International travel opportunities provided by Flo Valley’s Italian Learning Circle and our partnership with Canterbury Christ Church University College in England. Both of these opportunities allow for advanced research in art and art history.
  • Regularly scheduled visiting artists who share their ideas and experience with our students. Some of these artists serve as guest critics, others give demonstrations, slide lectures, gallery talks, or art workshops. Among many recent visiting artists were Joy Wade, C'Babi Bayoc, Grace Lin, Linda Vredeveld, M.J. Goerke, Dongfeng Li, Phillip Robinson, Jerome Stigler, and Chief Norman Tulley.
  • Off-campus exhibition opportunities such as the annual “Varsity Art Exhibition” at Art St. Louis and the biannual “Creative Spirits” show at UMSL
  • Art-themed community service opportunities such as involvement with the Ferguson Streetfest and the Old Town Florissant Festival
  • Annual Worlds AIDS activities such as the “Quilt Around the Quilt” exhibition
  • Art-focused collaborations with other areas/departments on campus
  • An annual scholarship competition to attend the Ox-Bow Summer School of Art, which is affiliated with School of the Art Institute of Chicago
  • Annual Student Exhibition
  • The Greenspace Project: students, either individually or collaboratively, may propose, and - with permission - execute new designs for the multi-paneled display on the northeast corner of the art building.
  • Annual League for Innovation Student Art Competition: Students whose work is accepted into this yearly national competition receive certificates of merit and their work and bios are printed in a full color exhibition catalog. A number of monetary awards are presented as part of this competition each year. Recent Florissant Valley students whose work was juried into the League competition include Jonathan Helms (Photography), Jason Spencer (General Fine Arts), Sonya Spafford (General Fine arts) and Beau Abbott (General Fine Arts).
