Fire Protection Technology

Associate in Applied Science Degree (FP)

This program is designed to train persons wanting to be a firefighter and upgrade the skills of persons currently employed in the fire protection technology field. Students also will gain a thorough knowledge of effective firefighting techniques and the ability to use equipment appropriate to extinguish all types of fires. They will become familiar with inspection techniques, municipal safety codes and ordinances, insurance regulations, alarm systems, hydraulics and structures.

The program also encompasses fire department management and procedures, water supplies, methods of calculation, and supervision and property inspection for the application of fire codes and insurance company requirements.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics, the employment rate for firefighters is expected to grow at an average rate.

Persons interested in fire protection technology should possess:

  • Mechanical aptitude
  • Good coordination
  • Good vision
  • Ability to exert maximum effort under discouraging conditions
  • Problem-solving skills
