Communications Arts - Film

Associate in Arts Degree (FV, FP, M)
Students choose from a variety of classes in the film/video option -- those devoted to film studies/analysis and those devoted to film and video production. Film studies courses include:

Film Appreciation
History of Film
Major Themes in Film: Comedy, Academy Award-Winning Films, History of Animation, Women in Film, and Musicals, to name a few
Major Directors: Alfred Hitchcock, John Ford, etc.
Film Making, TV Production, Radio Production

The courses give students in the film/video option hands-on experience to begin their education in the film/video field. Students taking these classes successfully transfer to four-year universities and colleges nationwide. Meramec students have won national awards, have had their films included in the St. Louis Filmmakers’ Showcase, and have gone on to produce their own independent, short- and feature-length films.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics, wage and salary employment in the motion picture and video industries is projected to grow 17 percent between 2004 and 2014, which is faster than the 14 percent growth projected for wage and salary employment in all industries combined due to the explosive growth of demand for programming needed to fill an increasing number of cable and satellite television channels.

For more information regarding the film/video option, contact Rob Hahn at 314-984-7837 or rhahn31@stlcc.edu; or the department assistant at 314-984-7537.

Film is an option within the Communications Arts program. More information can be found in the Communications Arts program.
