Community College throughout Missouri have received a $20 million grant from the U.S. Department of Labor to develop innovative approaches to address current and future workforce needs in Missouri’s largest industry – health services/sciences.

During the economic downturn, the nation's community colleges have experienced extraordinary growth under duress. At the same time, with few exceptions, community colleges endured brutal cuts in the state and local support that accounted for 55 percent of their revenue. Given this situation, community college campuses are enormously appreciative of President Obama's proposed $5 billion for their modernization as part of his American Jobs Act.

Jim Langley, who is now in his second season as an assistant soccer coach for St. Louis Community College, has vivid memories of the day a decade ago that would alter his life’s direction.

Journalist and Meramec graduate Greg Myre has spent the greater part of the last 20 years covering international conflicts and wars all over the world. Myre, the editor of NPR’s “Morning Edition” program and co-author of the book, titled "This Burning Land: Lessons from the Front Lines of the Transformed Israeli-Palestinian Conflict," credits a Meramec instructor he had in the late 1970s with influencing his career path.
