The World Affairs Council of St. Louis hosted a visit from Mexico’s ambassador to the United States, Gerónimo Gutiérrez Fernandez, at a dinner at the Four Seasons Hotel.

Attendees included students and faculty from the Global Education program at St. Louis Community College-Forest Park, who were sponsored by a grant from Maritz, LLC.

The ambassador’s visit to St. Louis acknowledges the important role the region plays in the Mexican economy. The ambassador addressed many issues that are vital to future relations with the United States.

For STLCC students, the event demonstrated the importance of learning a second language, and how their knowledge can contribute to a wider set of opportunities for future careers. It also provided an interesting way for students to create professional networks.

“Helping students experience international and intercultural events, such as this dinner with the ambassador of Mexico, is an extension of my classroom teaching,” said Layla Goushey, associate professor of English who also coordinates the Global Education program at Forest Park. “The event showed students real examples of how interpersonal communication impacts international relations.”

Arric Lucas, who is a member of Phi Theta Kappa and the Early College Academy on campus, said, “The event was very enlightening because it allowed me to see America and Mexico’s relationship from a new perspective. Overall, the experience was very enjoyable.”

The Global Education program enhances students’ understanding of issues shaping the world and develops theoretical and practical knowledge for living and working in a global society that has become interdependent.
