To encourage and inspire students to participate in service learning activities at St. Louis Community College-Meramec, the STLCC Foundation has created the E. Lynn and Connie Suydam Endowed Service Learning Fund.

Service learning is a teaching and learning strategy that integrates meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience, teach civic responsibility and strengthen communities.

Service learning is actively practiced on STLCC campuses, including the popular Semester of Service program at the Meramec campus. Students must complete at least 45 hours of service work within a semester in exchange for a letter of recognition sent to two employers or colleges of the students’ choice. The ultimate goal of the Service Learning programs on campus is for students to understand the importance of being lifelong, active citizens in their community.

The fund was established in memory of Suydam, former president of the Meramec campus and a longtime supporter of STLCC. He passed away in October 2016.

“Lynn strongly believed in the partnership between the community and community college students,” said Suydam’s wife Connie. “He saw a tremendous benefit to them both when they work together to solve community problems.”

The new fund will award $500 via one grant annually within the academic year. Applications for the grant are due on Sept. 1 of each year. This year’s deadline has been extended to Dec. 1 because the establishment of the funds was finalized after the annual deadline. Applicants must develop and submit a proposal for funding to the dean of Student Development and Enrollment Management, and successful applicants will be required to complete a post-grant evaluation.

Interested individuals and organizations are encouraged to make additional contributions to this fund.
