Tim Mosby had one goal in mind when he took over as coach of the men’s soccer team at St. Louis Community College four years ago. That was to restore the program to national prominence.

Mosby and the Archers have taken the first steps toward that lofty goal. They captured the Region XVI title in 2016. And now, for the first time since 2002, an STLCC soccer team is ranked No. 1 in the country. The Archers sit atop the most recent National Junior College Athletic Association Division I men’s soccer poll released Sept. 26.

This marks the first time since STLCC athletics was consolidated into a districtwide program in 2011 that an Archer team has attained the No. 1 national ranking. Prior to that time, STLCC teams had captured 12 national soccer championships, including 10 by the STLCC-Florissant Valley men’s squads.

“We slowly built the program with a style of play, players that bought into the system, and all of the players willing to play selflessly,” said Mosby, who earned Academic All-America honors while playing for Florissant Valley in 2001. “Here we are today. This No. 1 ranking is a reflection of all of us that are here now and came before. It was a process and still is. It is a nice honor that we will use to push ourselves even harder and harder into even bigger things.”

The Archers are currently 13-0-0 after defeating East Central College 5-3 on Sept. 26. They now are unbeaten in the past 32 regular-season matches dating back to 2015.

“As for our win streak, it is a part of my personality as a coach and the team,” said Mosby, the reigning Missouri Community College Athletic Conference and Region XVI Coach of the Year. “We pay attention to details needed to win. We take things one game at a time. We are strict, proactive and always prepared in training. I think that has shown during this 32-game win streak since 2015. We refuse to give anything but our best, and fight to the end.”

Eighteen different Archers have collected a point this season, and are paced by the 12 goals and 10 assists from Conor McArthur. Connor Walters has added nine goals, and Chris Eduardo and Mattias Tonking each has eight goals on the year.

During the 2016 campaign, the Archers topped out at the No. 7 spot in the NJCAA poll. They entered the 2017 season ranked 12th in the country, and have steadily climbed in the weekly poll.

The Archers are idle until Oct. 5. The men’s and women’s teams will face Metropolitan Community College-Maple Woods at the Florissant Valley campus. The men’s contest is slated for 4 p.m. The women’s contest kicks off at 2 p.m.
