Derek R. Novel of Florissant is a retired educator and active community volunteer. He was appointed to fill the Subdistrict 1 seat in May 2016.

Novel taught social studies at McCluer and McCluer North high schools, as well as Cherry Hill East High School (Cherry Hill, N.J.). Novel served as supervisor of social studies, languages, and arts in the Mainland Regional High School District (Linwood, N.J.). He was supervisor of curriculum and director of grants and state/federal programs in the Bridgeton (N.J.) School District. Also in New Jersey, Novel served as principal of Hazelwood Elementary School in the Middlesex School District and as project director for Even Start and 21st Century in Wildwood.

Novel has community college teaching experience as an instructor in adult education at St. Charles Community College. He has received numerous grants to study abroad and attend international workshops and seminars.

Novel holds a master’s degree in educational administration from Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville. His bachelor’s degree in social studies is from Hamline University (St. Paul, Minn.). He holds teaching and principal/supervisory certifications in New Jersey, as well as teaching certification in Missouri.
