St. Louis Community College’s culinary arts program is ranked as one of the top programs in the nation.

Best Choice Schools, a website ranking higher education institutions in various categories, ranks STLCC’s degree programs in culinary arts and baking and pastry arts as No. 9 in its ranking of “Top Culinary Schools 2016.”

The site looked for schools that offer hands-on experience, internship/externship opportunities, student operated restaurants, modern facilities and a solid reputation in the industry. Only schools that were nationally accredited or accredited by the American Culinary Federation were considered.

Schools were ranked based on an overall impression of the school, information from College Navigator, internet reviews and each institution’s website.  The top-ranked school is the International Culinary Center-New York and California.

STLCC’s Associate in Applied Science degree in Culinary Arts is a 64-credit-hour program designed to teach a variety of skills in food preparation and management so graduates are prepared for upward mobility in the culinary arts. Coursework includes preparation of American as well as international cuisine.

The AAS degree in Baking and Pastry Arts is a 65-credit-hour program that offers students hands-on training in a commercial bake shop environment. Students learn from and network with nationally recognized pastry chefs who are seasoned professionals that have served at the executive level in the hospitality industry.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that the demand for chefs and head cooks at restaurants and other establishments will grow 9 percent faster than most other industries in the country. With the popularity of cooking shows and competitions, more and more people are discovering the field of culinary arts and what it takes to be successful in the industry. Earning a certificate or degree in the field not only provides the experience and training students need to get their foot in the door, it also provides a foundation for upward mobility to become future leaders and trend setters in the industry.
