St. Louis Community College student Shayne McCrady recently competed for the American Culinary Federation’s Student Chef of the Year title at the ACF’s Cook. Craft. Create. Convention and Show in Phoenix, Ariz.

McCrady, the 2016 ACF Central Region Student Chef of the Year, competed against other regional winners in this timed event.

The student chefs, who had to bring all of their own equipment and ingredients to the competition, were given one hour to cook four portions on one entrée that had to include Char, a type of fish.

McCrady unfortunately went over the time by seven minutes, but received excellent reviews from some of the event’s judges.

A resident of Maplewood, McCrady graduated from STLCC with an associate degree in culinary arts in 2014. He will earn another associate degree in baking and pastry arts in 2016.

He currently is the sauté cook/line cook at The Gatesworth in St. Louis. McCrady began studying culinary arts as a junior at North County Technical High School and won silver medals at three competitions during high school.

As a member of the Cuisine Club at STLCC-Forest Park, McCrady was the treasurer in 2014 and president in 2015. He plans to work toward earning ACF certifications and continue to compete. McCrady is a member of Chefs de Cuisine Association of St. Louis Inc.

Established in 1929, the American Culinary Federation Inc. is the standard of excellence for chefs in North America. With more than 17,500 members spanning nearly 200 chapters nationwide, ACF is the leading culinary association offering educational resources, training, apprenticeship and programmatic accreditation.
