STLCC Seeks Host Families for Visiting German, Russian Students

April 28, 2016

St. Louis Community College is seeking host families for German and Russian students participating in the Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange for Young Professionals (CBYX) and Year of Exchange in America for Russians (YEAR).

CBYX is a reciprocal scholarship program that has been funded by the U.S. Congress and German Parliament (Bundestag) for the past 30 years. The program annually brings 75 young German professionals to study at colleges across the United States. Participants live with a host family, study at a local college and complete a six-month paid internship in their career field.

Funded by the U.S. Embassy in Moscow, the YEAR program provides 89 Russian students the opportunity to study at U.S. higher education institutions and to gain a new understanding of American society. The program aims to strengthen each participant's English skills and subject knowledge in his or her selected field of study.

While these programs are a cultural experience for the students, they also are an exciting opportunity for hosts. Hosts range from couples and families with children, to single individuals and grandparents. A host should be interested in having a young student in their home for a year and excited about an opportunity to learn and share with the student. The student should be integrated into the host’s daily life, help out in the household and participate in family activities and celebrations.

The students will arrive in St. Louis in August 2016 and stay with their hosts through July 2017.
