Archers Begin Search for New Basketball Coach as Reed Returns to Prep Ranks

Randy Reed has had tremendous success coaching high school basketball, and he’ll return to that level next year, he announced Tuesday. After a two-year stint with St. Louis Community College, Reed will become the head basketball coach at Cardinal Ritter College Prep.

Reed was 36-28 over his two years with the Archers, including a seventh-place finish in the NJCAA Tournament at the conclusion of the 2013-14 season.

“You hate replacing quality people, but we also know that there are going to be opportunities to leave,” athletic director Shawn Summe said. “I certainly didn’t look forward to having to replace Randy, with what he was able to do with our program.”

The search for Reed’s replacement began immediately. Summe arranged meetings with the two winningest coaches in STLCC history – Bob Nelson and Randy Albrecht – to begin the search for Reed’s successor.

“We’ve been in the works and having some discussions to speed up the process, and we’re hoping to move quickly on it,” Summe said. “St. Louis Community College will sell itself. We’ll get someone who is excited to be here and we’ll build off the success we’ve had. Hopefully we’ll contend for a national championship in the foreseeable future. There are people with great experience who have reached out, and it just depends on what route we’re going to go. I’ll spend some time with Randy and Bob and talk with them about. We have a committee together that will help with a search, and we’re going to do what is in the best interest of STLCC and our student-athletes.”

The new men’s basketball coach will be the second coaching hire for Summe, who joined STLCC in December. He previously hired Chris Arbini to head the Archers’ volleyball program.
