Meramec Offers the Chance to Imagine, Experience and Create

April 03, 2015

St. Louis Community College-Meramec hosts an open house that allows everyone the chance to imagine, experience and create their own works of art 1-5 p.m. April 18 from in the Humanities East and Humanities West buildings on campus, 11333 Big Bend Road.

Visitors to the interactive celebration can watch and participate in activities involving Meramec’s Design, Visual and Performing Arts departments. The activities are appropriate for ages 12 and older; however, children under 17 must be accompanied by an adult. All activities and events are free and open to the public.

Among the events in store for visitors include demonstrations of painting, sculpture and small metal jewelry techniques, plus image transferring for ceramic tiles, Raku pottery firing, figure drawing of a live model, and life drawing from nature and the micro world. There will also be printmaking and T-shirt screening, 3D printing and digital art, portrait photography, an interactive presentation on the psychological effects of color by the Interior Design department, plus performances from the Meramec Music department and more.

“The inspiration (of the event) was and is to celebrate the Design, Visual and Performing Arts departments with what it does so well,” said Jim Ibur, ceramics professor.

This is the first time STLCC has hosted an event like this, and Ibur is enthusiastic.

“I think that the celebration of creativity helps the community, providing fun and delight. Hopefully, a little magic can happen when people see the kind of things theatre, music and the visual arts are doing,” he said. “We are hoping to engage the St. Louis community in a new and different way, and invite them to see what we are doing. The event is a celebration, and so that’s what we want people to do with us – play.”

The “Imagine, Experience, Create” event takes place in the midst of an artistic weekend, as the Annual Juried Student Art Show is in the Meramec Contemporary Art Gallery April 17-May 5, and the Meramec Theatre presents the play “The Tragedy of Doctor Faustus” April 15-19. The play is recommended for mature audiences only.
