The Global Education Committee at St. Louis Community College-Florissant Valley is hosting a children’s storytelling troupe from Taiwan on Thursday, April 30.

The Starlight Goodwill Ambassadors will perform at 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. in the Training Center Room 105/107. Each performance will include a two-way question-and-answer session as well as a food sampling.

The Starlight Goodwill Ambassadors are participating in the St. Louis Storytelling Festival. Storytellers from around the country will be performing at dozens of venues across the metro area; the Taiwanese performance at the Florissant Valley campus is just one of those events.

The group consists of 27 student story tellers, ranging in age from eight to 12. Twenty five of the students hail from Taichung and two are from rural areas.

“They all speak some English, and have worked very hard to develop short traditional Chinese stories in English for their performances,” said Anthony Clark, associate professor of business administration at STLCC.

The students will be accompanied by a group of adult delegates from Taiwan, along with representatives from the St. Louis Storytelling Festival.

“My understanding is that for most, if not all, of the Taiwanese visitors this is their first visit to America,” Clark said.

The St. Louis Storytelling Festival is part of University of Missouri Extension. The festival, now in its 36th year, continues an ancient art. The three-day extravaganza features storytellers from across the nation and regional storytellers from Missouri and Illinois.

The performances are suitable for all members of the family, and all events will be free and open to the public.
