Meramec Theatre Conducts Auditions for “The Tragedy of Doctor Faustus”

February 03, 2015

St. Louis Community College-Meramec will conduct auditions for Christopher Marlowe’s “The Tragedy of Doctor Faustus” at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 17, and Wednesday, Feb. 18, in the Meramec Theatre on campus, 11333 Big Bend Road in Kirkwood.

Actors auditioning should prepare a one-minute monologue from Shakespeare or Marlowe. Performance dates are April 15-19. Scripts are on reserve in the STLCC-Meramec Library.

Marlowe’s “Faustus” reworks the late medieval myth of a brilliant scholar, so disillusioned with life, he resolves to make a contract with Lucifer’s henchman, Mephistopheles, for all the knowledge and pleasure of this world. Faustus, the embittered thinker, and Mephistopheles enter into their agreement, and soon Faustus is living a rejuvenated life and winning the love of the beautiful Gretchen. Yet, in this compelling tragedy of arrogance, unfulfilled desire and self-delusion, Faustus heads inexorably toward an infernal destruction.

“The Tragedy of Doctor Faustus” is directed by Keith Oliver and designed by Darren Thompson.
