CCAMPIS Program Provides Assistance For Child Care

January 27, 2015

More than 475 St. Louis Community College students have benefited from the Child Care Access Means Parents in School (CCAMPIS) grant since its inception in 2009.

The CCAMPIS grant is a federal program that aids Pell Grant-eligible St. Louis Community College students with the cost of child care. The grant utilizes more than 40 child development centers and school districts in the St. Louis region to assist STLCC parents with child care services.

Selena Washington, CCAMPIS program coordinator at STLCC, said the grant assists 200-250 students per school year.

“The grant impacted my life because I'm a wife and a mother of three,” said Lueta Stratton, STLCC student. “If it weren't for the grant, I wouldn’t be able to fulfill my dream and be a role model to my children.”

When surveyed, more than 95 percent would recommend the CCAMPIS program to other STLCC students.

Stratton said that she found out about the campus care grant through flyers on campus.

“The grant helped me accomplish a lifelong goal,” Stratton said. “My family and I are truly grateful.”

Through the CCAMPIS program, STLCC also conducts educational workshops on financial management, literacy, educational play/child development, and success strategies for student-parents and their children.
STLCC students who have enrolled or are enrolling their children ages 6 weeks to 12 years in a quality, licensed and accredited child care center are eligible for grant funds.

Those who receive CCAMPIS funds are awarded a fixed dollar amount for child care expenses for the semester based on the student’s credit hours, level of income and travel/study time.

CCAMPIS enrollment for the spring 2015 semester ends Feb. 9. For more information about the CCAMPIS grant, contact Washington at 314-513-4209 or seunice@stlcc.edu.
