December 10, 2014

The six-team St. Louis Community College Women’s Basketball Classic is on tap Dec. 12-13 in the gymnasium at the college’s Forest Park campus, 5600 Oakland Ave.

Three games each are slated for Friday and Saturday.

The host Archers will face Lewis and Clark Community College at 6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 12. The Archers enter the classic with a 9-2 record and are coming off of a 77-61 loss to Mineral Area College.  That loss snapped a four-game winning streak, and represented a rare loss on their home court.  Sophomore guard Deborah Holcomb ranks among the nation’s scoring leaders and is averaging 23.5 points per game.  Freshman guard Khalia Miller is averaging 15.4 points a contest.

Lewis and Clark is in the throes of a three-game losing streak, and are 3-8 on the season. Daniella Pisano, a sophomore guard, tops the squad in scoring with an average of 17.6 points a contest.

In the classic opener at 4 p.m. Friday, Morton College (2-9) takes on Illinois Central College (8-1). Morton College won its latest outing, an 89-51 win over Triton College.  Sophomore guard Franchessca Gill leads Morton in scoring, averaging 11.8 points per game. Illinois Central College, ranked third in the most recent NJCAA Poll, has won eight straight contests after dropping the season opener. Shaakera Jones and Hayley Reneau are averaging in double figures, with 11.4 and 10.8 points, respectively.

Moberly Area (4-5) faces Malcolm X College (4-5) in the nightcap at 8 p.m. The Greyhounds have lost three straight, while Malcolm X has won four straight. The Malcolm X attack features three players averaging double digits in scoring: freshman forward Joshona Wimbush (15.1), freshman guard Kiiara Ramey (12.1) and sophomore guard Chelsea Stone (12.0).

The classic concludes on Saturday. Illinois Central faces Malcolm X at 1 p.m.; STLCC takes on Morton College at 3 p.m., and the final at 5 p.m. pits Moberly Area against Lewis and Clark.
