STLCC Foundation to Award Five Ferguson Challenge Grant Scholarships

November 12, 2014

Hope – and opportunity – can be borne out of difficult situations.

To do something to affect positive change in Ferguson, anonymous donors decided to help boost educational opportunities for students in an area marked by unrest. These donors, along with the St. Louis Community College Foundation, have created the Ferguson Scholarship at St. Louis Community College Challenge Grant specifically to assist students who reside in the 63135 and 63136 ZIP codes.

The donors issued a challenge to match all funds received for the scholarship up to $25,000. Because of this generosity, the first five $500 scholarships for spring 2015 will be awarded during a special recognition event at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 19, in Room 105/107 of the Training Center at STLCC’s Florissant Valley campus, 3400 Pershall Road.

“We know that paying for a college education can be a real challenge for many students,” said Mark Birk, president of the STLCC Foundation Board of Directors. “We are grateful to the donors for providing a means to positively impact the lives of students directly affected by this unfortunate series of events. It is our hope that this challenge grant will open the door to educational opportunities that will make meaningful and lasting differences in the lives of current and future generations of students.”

A total of 120 students submitted applications for the scholarship.

To ensure that this same opportunity is available for future students, the STLCC Foundation continues to accept donations to the Ferguson Scholarship at St. Louis Community College Challenge Grant. Contributions will be matched, dollar for dollar up to $25,000, and will provide scholarships, books, and supplies for students from the Ferguson area pursuing a college degree at STLCC.
