The Montage, St. Louis Community College-Meramec's student newspaper, received a Newspaper Pacemaker Award by the Associated Collegiate Press at its 2014 National College Media Convention Nov. 1 in Philadelphia, Pa.

The Montage was one of 10 college newspapers recognized as a Newspaper Pacemaker winner, competing against two- and four-year colleges throughout the United States, British Columbia and Canada.

Since 1927, the Pacemaker Award has been the highest honor available to ACP members. The ACP Newspaper Pacemaker contest honors general excellence in collegiate newspapers. Winners were selected by a panel from the Poynter Institute, based on excellence in coverage and content, quality of writing and reporting, leadership on the opinion page, evidence of in-depth reporting, layout/design and photography, art and graphics.

At the national convention, the Montage was initially recognized as a finalist and later as winner of the Pacemaker Award. Four staff members and the faculty adviser attended the convention.
“It is a prestigious honor for our students,” said Shannon Philpott, faculty adviser. “The staff members work diligently to produce a solid newspaper that is creative, fair, balanced and accurate. Recognition from professional journalists and national journalism organizations is not only an indication that our students are on the right track, but also confirmation that they are producing content that meets and exceeds the standards comparable to prestigious four-year journalism schools throughout the country.”

Spencer Gleason, editor-in-chief, accepted the award on behalf of the staff. The Montage also was recognized as a third-place winner of a Pinnacle Award from the College Media Association for its website and ranked in the top 10 for the Best of Show competition at the convention.

Each year, the Montage competes nationally against several other two- and four-year school newspapers from across the country, including student newspapers from the other two STLCC campuses. The Montage was inducted into the ACP Pacemaker Hall of Fame in 1988, awarded a National Pacemaker in 1991, 1996 and 2007, and was a national finalist in 2003 and 2007.

In addition to national recognition, the Montage has consistently received individual awards from the Missouri College Media Association, including Best Overall Newspaper in the two-year school division.
