The ninth annual Media Literacy Week, presented by Gateway Media Literacy Partners, features events over two days at St. Louis Community College-Meramec, 11333 Big Bend Road in Kirkwood.

The theme for this year’s Media Literacy Week is “Environmentalism: The Media Ecosystem,” featuring discussions at locations across St. Louis looking at how media fosters and sometimes hinders awareness of the environment and details deemed pertinent to its stability.

Two workshops take place on Wednesday, Nov. 12. The first workshop, “From iPad into the Fire: Talking About Climate Using the Tools of Media Literacy,” takes place from 9-11 a.m. The second workshop, “Environmental Front Lines: Learning to Read the World Right Where We Live,” takes place from noon-2 p.m. Both workshops will be conducted in Student Center 200-201.

Sox Sperry of Project Look Sharp will present both workshops. Sperry is an award-winning media literacy educator well known for environmentally-focused media literacy efforts.

A panel discussion entitled “Broadcasting Enviro-Literacy: The Relationship between Environmental Literacy and Electronic Media” takes place 11 a.m.-12:15 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 13, in the Library Confluence Room. The panelists are Jean Ponzi and Larry Lazar.

Ponzi hosts the environmental radio talk shows “Earthworms” on KDHX and “Growing Green in St. Louis” on KTRS. Ponzi also serves as the green resources manager for EarthWays Center, a division of Missouri Botanical Garden.

Lazar is the organizer of Climate Reality-St. Louis. A one-time skeptic of climate change, Lazar’s passion, research and interests have motivated him to take a prominent role in discussions of environmental issues and environmental literacy in the region and beyond.

The events are free and open to the public. For a full schedule of events, visit Gateway Media Literacy Partners.
