Softball Team Ends Season with 1-2 Mark in Region XVI Tourney
May 07, 2014
The St. Louis Community College softball team rode a four-game winning streak into the Region XVI Tournament, but could not sustain the momentum through the weekend.
The Archers opened with a 6-3 win over Mineral Area College, but then dropped their next two contests and were eliminated from the competition. STLCC fell to East Central 6-1 in the semifinals, and then were ousted by Mineral Area 7-4. They finished their season at 17-24-1 overall, and 5-14-1 in conference play.
STLCC had seen quite a bit of its regional tourney foes in the closing weeks of the season. The Archers split four contests with East Central, and were shut out twice in a doubleheader loss to Mineral Area on April 11.
In the Archers’ tournament-opening win, sophomore utility player Taylor Green was 1-for-3 and drove in two runs, and sophomore shortstop Sarah Goris collected two hits. Freshman pitcher Rebecca Vogt went the distance for the win, striking out four batters while walking five.
The loss to East Central sent the Archers in the losers’ bracket in the double-elimination tourney. Catcher Mallory Pappert, a freshman, drove in the lone Archers run, and Goris again had two hits. Vogt took the loss.
In their final contest, Mineral Area erased a 4-2 Archer lead with a five-run outburst in the bottom of the fifth inning. Vogt again took the loss. Freshman third baseman Sarah Strothkamp hit a two-run homer, and freshman first baseman Ashley Kendall had a pair of hits.
For the season, sophomore outfielder Maggie Wright led the team with a .370 batting average, five home runs and 50 runs batted in. Vogt finished with three home runs, 22 RBI and a .299 average. Green was the only other Archer regular to hit over the .300 mark; she hit .307. Kendall hit .294 with 14 RBI.
As a team, the Archers hit .283, scored 232 runs and clubbed 14 home runs.
Vogt led the pitching staff with a 9-9 record, and had a 3.55 earned run average. She also struck out 108 batters in 154 innings.
