Archers Look to End Slide in Region XVI Play
April 03, 2014
Katherine Harper and the Archers hope the spring
showers stay away so they can play a double-
header Saturday against Cottey College. The first
game is slated for noon at STLCC-Meramec.
After treading near .500 for the first two weeks of the regular season, the Archers have hit a bit of a snag over the past two, having dropped their past six games.
STLCC, which enters this weekend at 6-14 overall, has had a rocky go of it in Region XVI competition. The Archers currently feature a record of 1-6. They are in the midst of a 10-game homestand, which included sweeps at the hands of Three Rivers Community College and Kaskaskia Community College.
The Archers continue to be paced by a potent lineup that is batting .283 entering play this weekend, and is averaging 5.9 runs per game. Sophomore Maggie Wright leads the Archers with a .375 average, four home runs and 26 RBI.
The Archers’ recent struggles have seen the team drop a couple late-inning leads, including Sunday (March 30) against Kaskaskia, when the visitors put together a four-run seventh to overcome an 8-5 Archers lead in the nightcap of a doubleheader.
“We’ve been doing the same thing, where we’ve had the lead going into the last inning, and we’ve given it up in that last inning,” said Sharon Marquardt, the Archers head coach. “It kind of takes the wind out of your sails a little bit, and to score a couple in the bottom half, it’s tough to do against a team like that. We just have to buckle down and have, for lack of a better term, a ‘killer instinct’ to put the last nail in the coffin, and we haven’t figured out how to do that yet.”
The Archers will look to make that final adjustment this weekend, when, weather permitting, they are slated to host Cottey College at noon on Saturday at STLCC-Meramec. The Archers put together two of their best games of the year in their last meeting with Cottey. They swept the Comets in a March 22 doubleheader, winning the two games by a combined 31-5 margin.
