Students Erin Ace and April Layton, along with their adviser, Syed Chowdhury, attended the 2014 Amnesty International Human Rights Conference.

Student members and the sponsor of the local chapter of Amnesty International at St. Louis Community College-Wildwood recently attended the annual General Meeting and Human Rights Conference in Chicago.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Students April Layton and Erin Ace and Syed Chowdhury, professor of anatomy and physiology who serves as the chapter sponsor, attended many sessions to learn about human rights issues and how to lobby for change. Topics included gun violence in Chicago, hyper-criminalization and racial profiling of minorities, the U.S. government’s use of mass surveillance, its policy on whistle blowers and adversarial journalism, worker’s rights, LGBT issues, and the abuse and trafficking of women. They also participated in a demonstration in front of the federal building in downtown Chicago against the war and the killing of innocent people in Syria.

The students also networked with other officers of the Missouri chapter of Amnesty International, as well as with Steven Hawkins, executive director of the organization.
