STLCC-Florissant Valley Hosts WYSE Academic Challenge

March 05, 2014

Approximately six teams of high school students are expected to compete in the Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering (WYSE) Academic Challenge 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Friday, March 7, in the Student Center Multipurpose at St. Louis Community College-Florissant Valley, 3400 Pershall Road.

Participating schools include Clayton High School, Living Word Christian Schools, Trinity Catholic High School, North County High School, West County R-IV High School and Linn High School.

“It’s encouraging to see that many of the students attending the WYSE competition this week have also participated in the Tests of Engineering Aptitude, Mathematics and Science (TEAMS), Project Lead the Way (PLTW) and FIRST®  competitions on campus,” said Steve Ehlen, engineering technology instructor at STLCC-Florissant Valley. “This seems to indicate that students understand the value of academic competitions in the science, technology, engineering and math fields.”

The WYSE Academic Challenge is a competitive series of tests created and administered by WYSE and offered to high school students in Illinois and Missouri. The tests are now offered by more than 50 community colleges and universities and are designed to present a challenge to the brightest students.

Test material is drawn from senior high school- and freshman-level college curricula. Written by teams of college and university faculty, subjects for the test include biology, chemistry, computer science, engineering graphics, English, mathematics and physics. Each WYSE test production team creates three tests of increasing levels of difficulty, regional, sectional and state finals. Students may compete as individuals and as part of a team; they have 40 minutes to complete multiple-choice tests that range in length from 30 questions (computer science) to 100 questions (English).

STLCC-Florissant Valley’s Engineering and Technology department has hosted the WYSE competition sectional since 2002.
