Pacific High School sophomores went a step further to explore careers at a special workshop hosted by St. Louis Community College-Wildwood.

Sophomores take the Missouri Connections Career Assessment in early January at the high school. The assessment helps students to narrow their career focus by grouping their interests into four possible areas.

The PHS Guidance office, A+ office, and STLCC staff used the results to identify the most popular career areas and then arranged a trip to Wildwood during the school day to help students explore those careers and the academic paths that lead to them.

During the workshop, more than 180 students had the opportunity to meet with STLCC staff, faculty and alumni with experience in those areas. Each student participated in three small group presentations depending on their personal career assessment results. The top areas were business/marketing/finance, architecture, agriculture, fine art, health, law, education, engineering/science/manufacturing, human services, information technology, hospitality, and automotive/transportation.

Quinn Flexsenhar, A+ coordinator at PHS, thought the event was a valuable experience for their students.

“I have heard nothing but positive comments from the students and staff that attended,” he said. “I hope this is something we can continue in the future.”

The event was coordinated by Katie Martin, interim coordinator of enrollment management at Wildwood, and Kevin Andert, CTE transition specialist at Meramec.
