Field Set for NJCAA Basketball Tourney

The St. Louis Community College men’s basketball team will face Des Moines Area Community College in the opening round of the 2014 National Junior College Athletic Association Division II Championships, which tip off Tuesday, March 18, in Danville, Ill.

 

The Archers (20-10) will meet third-seeded Des Moines (28-5) at 1 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on http://www.ihigh.com/njcaatv/index.html.

Seven of the top 20 teams in the final NJCAA Division II poll qualified for the tourney, including No. 1 ranked Cincinnati State Technical and Community College (27-3), which also captured the top seed in the 16-team field. Wayne County Community College District (25-4) earned the second seed, and South Suburban College (28-5) was seeded fourth.

 

Phoenix College, Essex County, South Suburban and Central Community are the only teams making a return trip to Danville. Carl Sandburg, Dean College, Fort Scott, Wake Technical, Wayne County and Potomac State will be making their first-ever trips to national tournament.

 

The other opening round matchups on March 18 are Wayne County playing Carl Sandburg (18-14) in the opening game at 9 a.m. That will be followed by No. 7 Wake Technical Community College (23-10) against Potomac State of West Virginia (20-8) at 11 a.m., and No. 6 Essex County (25-5) against Dean College (21-3). The evening session will feature Cincinnati State against Garrett College (19-10) at 6:30 p.m., to be followed by No. 8 Central Community College (22-10) against John Wood (24-9) at 8:30 p.m.

 

The opening round concludes on Wednesday, March 19, with South Suburban, making its fifth appearance in seven seasons, facing Fort Scott (14-16) at 11 a.m., and No. 5 Phoenix College (24-8) faces Lake Michigan (20-10) at 1 p.m.

 

The tournament concludes on Saturday, March 22, with the championship game set for 7:30 p.m.
