Archers Knock Off Mid-South, Advance to NJCAA Tourney

figures in scoring in the Archers' 91-77 win over Mid-South
Community College March 8. The Archers earned a berth in
the NJCAA Division II Tournament March 18-22 in Danville,

Randy Reed acknowledged he had little more to prove at the high school level when taking over St. Louis Community College’s men’s basketball program last summer.

“I kind of topped out,” said Reed, who won three state championships during his tenure at McCluer North High School.

Reed has carried that success to the collegiate level. Following a 91-77 win over Mid-South Community College on Saturday, the Archers captured the District XIII championship and qualified for their first national tournament berth since moving to a districtwide athletic department in 2011.

The win also gave the Archers (20-10) their third consecutive 20-win campaign. After dropping three of their final five games to close the regular season, STLCC has hit its stride in the postseason, having won four straight to become the first STLCC men’s team to advance to the national tournament since the Randy Albrecht-coached Meramec Magic finished seventh in the nation in 2011.

The Archers had one of their most balanced scoring games of the season, as five different players registered double figures, led by Randy Reed, Jr., who finished with 20 points, along with a game-high nine rebounds.
Fellow starters Cortez Conners, Jake Hensel and Jaylen Fulton, as well as reserve Tevin Evans, all scored 13 or more points in Saturday’s win.

The NJCAA Division II Tournament is slated March 18-22 in Danville, Ill. First-round action is slated for March 18 and 19. The championship game will be played at 7:30 p.m. March 22. Tournament information can be found at www.dacc.edu/njcaa.
