St. Louis Community College-Florissant Valley will join 75 other colleges and universities to host the 2014 Tests of Engineering Aptitude, Mathematics and Science (TEAMS) Competition on Friday, Feb. 21.

TEAMS is an annual competition for middle- and high-school students designed to help them discover their potential for engineering. STLCC-Florissant Valley has been hosting the TEAMS competition since 1993.

The competition will be divided into two parts. Part 1 will take place at 9 a.m. and Part 2, at 10:45 a.m., in the Multipurpose Room in the Student Center. An awards ceremony will follow at 1 p.m., where awards will be presented based on students' scores on the first part of the test. The awards ceremony will be open to the public.

The TEAMS competition will be based on the 2014 theme, “Engineering Tomorrow's Cities.” Students will address engineering challenges in areas such as transportation, green space and fresh water supply.

“We currently have 34 teams from seven area high schools and each team typically has eight students,” said Steve Ehlen, engineering technology instructor at STLCC-Florissant Valley.

After participating in TEAMS, students increase their knowledge of engineering, feel more confident about participating in engineering activities and increase their ability to work with others to solve complex problems.

Some 10,000 ninth- to 12th-grade TEAMS participants will gather for one-day events between Feb. 10 and March 22 at 100 competition sites nationwide. The TEAMS national competition will take place June 27-July 1 in Washington, D.C., during the national Technology Student Association Conference.
