Elida Kraja, assistant professor and accounting program coordinator at St. Louis Community College-Florissant Valley, recently was elected president of Missouri Association of Accounting Educators.

Kraja served as vice president and program chair prior to the appointment.

“It has been very hard work, but it is also very rewarding to serve,” said Kraja.

Math, logic and numbers  always have intrigued Kraja, so accounting seemed to be the logical career field.

Kraja started working for the college in 2002 as an adjunct accounting instructor at the Forest Park campus. In August 2008, she became a full-time faculty member at Florissant Valley.

“I have always loved teaching and learning, and St. Louis Community College gives me a chance do that and also make a small positive contribution to the society,” she said. “I love to see my students succeed.”

A former Fulbright Scholar, Kraja worked in the public sector since 1999 and still has her own accounting business. She formerly worked for Ernst & Young as an auditor. Prior to that, she taught accounting for two years at the University of Illinois, and 10 years at the University of Tirana, Albania.

“I have been fortunate to be able to do both -- teaching and practicing accounting,” Kraja said.“But honestly, there is no contest between the two. My heart is in the classroom.”

Kraja has a bachelor’s degree in finance and a master’s in accounting from the University of Tirana. She also has a master’s in accounting and taxation from the University of Illinois, and an executive management certificate from the University of Illinois.

Kraja is a member of the American Accounting Association, Missouri Society of CPAs and Teachers of Accounting at Two Year Colleges.
