Women Are Winning the Hard Way

Abby Hutson looks to pass out of trouble in the Archers'
victory over Rend Lake Nov. 13.

As has been its custom through the season’s first seven games, the Archer women’s basketball team defeated McKendree University’s junior varsity 70-61, despite outscoring the Bearcats in just one half.

The Archers enter this week with a 6-1 record, winning the majority of those five games with a strong finishing kick.

The Archers’ start has been fueled largely by the team’s depth and offensive balance. Four different players are averaging more than 12 points per game, paced by freshman forward Deborah Holcomb’s 13.8 per game.

“I keep telling them, we haven’t played a complete game yet,” Archers head coach Shelly Ethridge said following the Archers’ 70-61 win over Washington University’s junior varsity on Nov. 20.

Of the team’s six wins, only two have come against junior varsity programs. The Archers won what may have been their signature victory on Nov. 11, when a second-half surge fueled a 70-59 win over Jefferson College at home.

The Archers will look to find the complete game referenced by Ethridge this week, when they play Lindenwood-Belleville’s junior varsity Nov. 27, before looking to complete a season sweep against Jefferson College on Dec. 4.
