STLCC-Meramec Honors Emerging Scholars
November 25, 2013
Sally Wilson, left, accepts the Meramec Emerging Scholar of the
Year Award from Pam McIntyre, Meramec's acting president.
The St. Louis Community College-Meramec 2013 Emerging Scholars were honored at a banquet Nov. 19.
The Emerging Scholars program honors students who begin college in two or more developmental courses and have since completed 24 hours of college-level work at a 3.5 GPA.
This year’s Emerging Scholars are Ashley Adams, Bradley Broach, Kalyani Ganesh, Genevieve Hall, Jamie Stafos, and 2013 Meramec Emerging Scholar of the Year, Sally Wilson.
Wilson plans to graduate from STLCC and transfer to a four-year university and pursue a degree in psychology. Eventually, she plans to practice clinical psychology and focus on girls and women with eating disorders and body image issues.
“There are some people who take their intelligence, combine it with a surplus of kindness and pay a heavy price for the pain they see around them,” said Wilson’s mentor, Terry Cooper, professor in behavioral sciences. “When others might turn away, they stay focused on the needs of others, even when it hurts to watch because they know that is how healing occurs. Sally is a person with a desire to learn, but she is more than that. Sally has a heart that cannot help getting involved because she notices human needs that many of us overlook.”
As the 2013 Emerging Scholar of the Year, Wilson received a $500 scholarship. In addition, each Emerging Scholar received a paid membership into the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society.
In addition to Cooper, other Emerging Scholars mentors are Christina Branson, Lisa Martino-Taylor, Sanela Mesic, Lin Roberts and Jane Tucker.
Vernon Kays, dean of business and communications, was the advisor for the committee, which was co-chaired by Sandy Brady and Kelly Wavering, and included Steve Brady, Victoria Cernich, Cynthia Clausen, Mysha Clincy, Marcia Mani, Lisa Mizes, Nancy Molik, Linda Nissenbaum, Tim Pederson and Katy Smith.
