Archers Clinch Second Straight Region XVI Crown
November 04, 2013

Archers' 2-0 win over St. Charles Community College in the Region
XVI championship game.
With a 2-0 win over St. Charles Community College, the St. Louis Community College women’s soccer team claimed its second consecutive Region XVI Tournament title on Saturday.
The Archers will now play for the District D title, and a return trip to the NJCAA Tournament.
They will face Lewis and Clark Community College, who the Archers have already faced twice this year, losing both times. STLCC will host the playoff game at its Meramec campus on Sunday (Nov. 10). Game time is 1 p.m.
In a season marred at times by injury, the Archers appear to have saved some of their best soccer for the end of the season. STLCC concluded the regular season with only one loss in its final eight games, and claimed the Region XVI title by shutting out MCC-Maple Woods and St. Charles Community College, both by 2-0 margins.
Sophomore forward Jessica Smugala scored the first goal of the championship game in the seventh minute, which would prove to be all the Archers would need on the afternoon. Smugala’s 19 goals this year rank 32nd nationally. Freshman forward Casey Gutting added an insurance goal in the 68th minute. Sophomore goaltender Apolonia Thomas played all 90 minutes in goal in the championship tilt, and registered her third solo shutout of the season.
That win followed a 2-0 win over Maple Woods that remained scoreless until late in the second half. In the 82nd minute, freshman Taylor Tosovsky scored from about 35 yards out to break the deadlock. Sophomore Taylor Giese added an insurance goal in the 84th minute to secure the two-goal winning margin.
With the two postseason victories, the Archers finished the year a perfect 6-0 against Region XVI opponents.
